H1N1 now in the post-pandemic period

WHO declared today that the H1N1 influenza virus has moved into the post-pandemic period. The Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus has spread to most part of the world and in all age groups. The evidence is strong that the recent influenza pandemic patterns have moved to seasonal patterns of influenza. However, the new H1N1 virus can be expected to remain for many years. While individual influenza seasons can be highly variable and difficult to predict, countries are advised to continue monitoring respiratory diseases activity. Public is advised to take precautions to protect themselves from influenza and other respiratory infections.

In WHO's South- East Asia Region, a total of 76,302 cases of Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 and 2,054 deaths have been reported as per information on August 5, 2010. Majority of countries in the Region are either reporting no activity or a decreasing trend in respiratory diseases activity. However the situation in the Member States needs to be monitored on an ongoing basis. The intensity in the South-East Asia Region has been low to moderate and overall impact is low. It is likely that the H1N1 influenza virus will continue to be circulated in parts of countries in South-East Asia especially in areas that previously less affected.
