Update on Avian Influenza - 2009
03 September 2009 –
Bangladesh
The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, Government of
Bangladesh has reported two fresh outbreaks of H5 poultry AI outbreaks in two
districts on 29 August 2009, i. e. Chittagong
and Rajshahi. As of 01 September 2009, a total of 326 outbreaks had been recorded
in 48 districts out of 64 districts of Bangladesh. A total of 1,690,662
chickens have been culled.
Previous outbreaks have been reported in the districts of Chittagong, Dhaka,
Dinajpur, Gaibandha, Gazipur, Kurigram, Manikgonj, Mirpur, Naranyanganj, Natore,
Patuakhali, Rangapur, and Thakurgaon during January-June 2009.
So far, the first and only human case of H5N1 infection
occurred in January 2008.

31 March 2009 – India
Fresh outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI)
has been reported in North Dinajpur of West Bengal.
It started on 17 March 2009 and affected 363 rural backyard poultry.
Epidemiological investigation is ongoing. Poultry in an area of 3-km-radius
of the outbreaks will be culled and surveillance will be carried out in an
area of 10-km-radius.
There were reports of HPAI outbreaks in poultry in Darjeeling and Dakshin Dinajpur, Coochbehar districts of
West Bengal and Ravongla district of Sikkim of India in January-February 2009.
So far, no cases of human avian influenza have been
reported from India.

31 March 2009 – Bangladesh
The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, Government of
Bangladesh has reported six H5 poultry AI outbreaks in six districts in last
week of March, i.e. Dinajpur, Patuakhali, Chittagong, Rangapur, Narayanganj
and Gaibandha. As of 31 March 2009, a total of 316 outbreaks had been
recorded in 47 districts out of 64 districts of Bangladesh. A total of 1,67463, 808 chickens have been culled.
Previous outbreaks have been reported in the districts of
Dhaka, Chittagong,
Kurigram, Naranyanganj, Mirpur, Manikgonj and Thakurgaon during
January-February 2009.
So far, the first and only human case of H5N1 infection
occurred in January 2008.

28 February 2009 – India
Fresh outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI)
has been reported in Punding
Forest Busty
Village, Kurseong
Block, Darjeeling District of West Bengal on 24
February 2009. Samples collected tested positive for H5N1 HPAI at the
National Institute of Virology, Pune. Poultry in an area of 3-km-radius of
the outbreaks will be culled and surveillance will be carried out in an area
of 10-km-radius.
Recent HPAI outbreak was reported in Harirampur,
Baramahar, Dakshin Dinajpur of West
Bengal which started on 14 February 2009 and affected 35 out of
1,500 rural backyard poultry.
There were reports of HPAI outbreaks in poultry in Darjeeling (Matigara, Rangli Rangliot) and Coochbehar
(Mathabhanga-I, Dinhata-I) districts of West Bengal and Ravongla district of
Sikkim of India
in January 2009.
So far, no cases of human avian influenza have been
reported from India.

Avian Influenza in Sikkim, West Bengal and Assam, India
Sikkim
Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries has
notified outbreak of Avian Influenza in poultry in the Hospital Road locality of Ravongla Municipality in South Sikkim District
on 19.1.2009. Culling activity has started on 20.1.2009. So far 1139 birds
have been culled. Animal health workers involved in culling have been
medically examined and are on chemoprophylaxis.
The central rapid response team from Ministry of Health
and Family Welfare (MOHFW) have reached the affected area and held meeting
with the district authorities. Health authorities are mapping and listing
villages and population in 0-3 Km area and 3-10 Km area to start surveillance
activities. Central RRT are
training health care workers on 21st and 22nd January. IEC materials have
already been dispatched.
The Ministry of Health has provided the necessary supplies
to the affected areas.
The situation is being monitored on a daily basis.
West
Bengal
The DAHD, Government of India, has notified containment
operations are on in epicenters reported in the Darjeeling District. 290
health workers are conducting active house to house surveillance. So far
about 35,162 birds have been culled. 121 Animal Health workers are under
chemoprophylaxis. The state has sufficient stock of Oseltamivir and PPE.
Assam
Since the first notification of Avian Influenza in Assam
on 27.11.2008, 17 other epicenters, spread over eight districts have been
notified. The last notification was on 24.12.2008. No new centres have been
notified. So far a total of 462,670 birds have been culled.
A total of 108 Animal Health workers, who were deployed
for the culling activity are on Chemoprophylaxis. Sufficient anti-viral drugs
and Personal Protective Equipment are in stock with the State Government
The situation is being monitored on a daily basis. There
is no suspect case of human avian influenza.

22 January 2009 - Indonesia
The Ministry of Health of Indonesia has announced two new
confirmed cases of human infection with the H5N1 avian influenza virus. A
29-year-old female from Tangerang District, Banten Province
developed symptoms on 11 December 2008, was hospitalized on 13 December and
died on 16 December. The investigation indicated that she visited a wet
market to buy fresh produce, including chicken meat, on a daily basis.
Household contacts were placed under medical observation, where none
developed illness.
The second case, a 5-year-old female from Bekasi City,
West Java Province developed symptoms on 23 December 2008, was hospitalized
on 27 Dec 2008 and died on 2 January 2009. The investigation indicated that
she visited a wet market to buy chicken meat and eggs two days prior to
symptom onset. Contacts were placed under medical observation, where none
developed illness.
Laboratory tests confirmed the presence of the H5N1 avian
influenza virus in both cases.
Of the 141 cases confirmed to date in Indonesia,
115 have been fatal.

Avian Influenza in Sikkim, West Bengal and Assam, India

The Department of Animal husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries,(DAHD) Government of India, has reported the unusual
mortality of poultry bird in South Sikkim.
Poultry samples tested at the High Security Animal Disease Laboratory in Bhopal confirmed that
samples from Hospital Road,
Ravongla Municipality of South Sikkim district are positive for the H5 strain
of Avian Influenza. All poultry within a radius of 3 kilometres of the focus
of the infection will be culled and surveillance will be carried out over a
further radius up to 10 kilometres.

and Rangli Rangliot of Darjeeling
district on 2nd and 6th January 2009 respectively. On receiving information
from that Department, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has deputed a
Central Team to assist the State Government in containment operations.

district on 2nd January 2009. On receiving information from that Department,

assist the State Government in containment operations.
