Efficient
laboratory support critical for IHR (2005) implementation
Laboratories provide critical support to
several activities under IHR (2005) pertaining to surveillance, early
detection and diagnosis and treatment. The efficient laboratory support can
be provided through nationally coordinated network of laboratories that
generate quality results. Need to strengthen core capacity in area of
laboratories was felt in 3rd Regional Meeting of IHR Focal Points held at
Dhaka from 15-17 February 2010.

Regional training in
influenza A (H1N1) laboratory diagnosis concludes
As
a part of WHO efforts to strengthen national influenza pandemic
preparedness, a regional training workshop resulted in enhanced skills and
knowledge of laboratory professionals in PCR-based diagnosis of influenza A
(H1N1). The primers produced within the Region for PCR are being provided
to all the Member countries to ensure capacity to diagnose influenza A
(H1N1) in the Region.
Currently, case definition for confirmed case requires
among others PCR based diagnosis. WHO reports only laboratory confirmed
cases of influenza A (H1N1).
