Biorisk management in laboratories

Biorisk management in laboratoriesWHO organized an advanced training programme on biorisk management in health laboratories for South-East Asia to strengthen biosafety and biosecurity in health laboratories in the Region. The course included assessment, mitigation and performance components of biorisk management. CEN standard CWA 15793: 2008 applicable to biorisk management was discussed and shared with participants.

Universal screening of donated blood for HIV in SEA RegionAround 9.4 million units of blood that are collected annually in South-East Asia Region are screened for HIV. The prevalence of HIV in blood donors is estimated to vary from 0 to 0.514 percent in countries of Region.

SEA Regional Strategy on Antimicrobial Resistance

SEA Regional Strategy on Antimicrobial ResistanceA Regional Strategy for Prevention and Containment of Antimicrobial Resistance has been  finalized by a group of experts who also gave a call to Member countries to adapt this strategy and rapidly scale-up the interventions detailed in it. The goal of the strategy is to reduce mortality and morbidity due to resistant organisms and  to preserve efficacy of available antimicrobial agents as well as discovery of new drugs/interventions.

Efficient laboratory support critical for IHR (2005) implementation.Laboratories provide critical support to several activities under IHR (2005) pertaining to surveillance, early detection and diagnosis and treatment. The efficient laboratory support can be provided through nationally coordinated network of laboratories that generate quality results. Need to strengthen core capacity in area of laboratories was felt in 3rd Regional Meeting of IHR Focal Points held at Dhaka from 15-17 February 2010.

Regional Networks for Priority Emerging Infectious Diseases Forged

Regional Networks for Priority Emerging Infectious Diseases ForgedTo enhance the regional laboratory capacity to support public health actions for combating emerging infectious diseases, regional laboratory networks for priority emerging infectious diseases viz. plague, anthrax, leptospirosis, acute diarrhoeal diseases (including cholera),  antimicrobial resistance; arboviruses (dengue and chikungunya), acute encephalitis syndrome, Nipah virus, and acute respiratory infections (including influenza) were forged in a meeting held at Colombo, Sri Lanka from 28-31 July 2009.

Asia Pacific Strategy on Health Laboratories endorsed

A group of experts representing countries from South-East Asia and Western Pacific Regions of WHO endorsed the Asia PacificRegional experts endorse Asia Pacific Strategy on Health LaboratoriesStrategy for Strengthening Health Laboratory Services (2010-2015) in a meeting held at Bali, Indonesia from 23 to 25 June 2009.

The strategy has key elements that address issues of development of a coherent national framework for laboratories, building capacity, assuring quality, promoting rational use, improving safety, supporting research and financing health laboratory services.

The document shall play dual role of advocacy as well as a guide to develop national laboratory strengthening plans.

SEA Regional training in influenza A (H1N1) laboratory diagnosis concludes

Capacity for diagnosis of Influenza A H1N1 enhancedAs a part of WHO efforts to strengthen national influenza pandemic preparedness, a regional training workshop resulted in enhanced skills and knowledge of laboratory professionals in PCR-based diagnosis of influenza A (H1N1). The primers produced within the Region for PCR are being provided to all the Member countries to ensure capacity to diagnose influenza A (H1N1) in the Region.

Currently, case definition for confirmed case requires among others PCR based diagnosis. WHO reports only laboratory confirmed cases of influenza A (H1N1).
