The
global case-load has reduced by almost 90% over the last 20 years. Over 15
million cases have been detected and cured worldwide. About 0.3 million new
cases were detected during the year 2005. At the beginning of 2006, the
global leprosy prevalence was about 0.2 million cases. The South-East Asia
Region accounted for about 60% of these cases.

During the past three years, the number of new cases
detected globally has also decreased steadily, by about 20% per year.
