Disability prevention and alleviation is an essential
component of LF elimination. Major activities in the Region include:
Implementation of the programmes aiming at empowering patients to
manage lymphoedema effectively and adopting a public health approach for
hydrocelectomy;
Training on morbidity management;
An international workshop was conducted in the year 2000, in which 23
personnel were trained. This was followed by workshops at the national level;
TDR workshop on disability prevention was held in Sri
Lanka in November 2003;
Training
Guidelines have been distributed to all country programmes;
In India,
nation-wide training and implementation is on-going and being intensified;
Model projects:
Commenced in Sri
Lanka in 2003 and Indonesia
in 2004;
Planned for Timor
Leste and Myanmar
in 2005-2006;
Hydrocelectomy:
Routine surgery (India,
Myanmar, Sri
Lanka);
Camp approach (Bangladesh,
Kerala in India);
Countries are now paying increasing attention to alleviate disability
of LF;
