Disability Prevention and Alleviation

Disability prevention and alleviation is an essential component of LF elimination. Major activities in the Region include:

 

*      Implementation of the programmes aiming at empowering patients to manage lymphoedema effectively and adopting a public health approach for hydrocelectomy; 

*      Training on morbidity management;

*      An international workshop was conducted in the year 2000, in which 23 personnel were trained. This was followed by workshops at the national level;

*      TDR workshop on disability prevention was held in Sri Lanka in November 2003;  

*      Training Guidelines have been distributed to all country programmes;

*      In India, nation-wide training and implementation is on-going and being intensified;

*      Model projects:

*     Commenced in Sri Lanka in 2003 and Indonesia in 2004;

*     Planned for Timor Leste and Myanmar in 2005-2006;

*      Hydrocelectomy:

*     Routine surgery (India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka);

*     Camp approach (Bangladesh, Kerala in India);

*      Countries are now paying increasing attention to alleviate disability of LF;
