Workshop on Programme
Management of Drug Resistant Tuberculosis
A Regional Workshop on Programme
Management of Drug Resistant Tuberculosis was organized between 6 and 10 August 2007, in Faridabad,
India. 35 participants
from all 11 SEAR Member States attended the workshop. The objectives of this
workshop were to review the status of the management of drug-resistant
tuberculosis in countries in the Region, to impart knowledge on the
standardized approach for the management of multi-drug resistant TB, and to
impart skills to effectively plan, implement, and monitor activities to
address multi-drug resistant (MDR) TB
under national programmes. The meeting was attended
by the staff of MDR-TB projects from India,
Nepal and Bangladesh
and programme managers, who brought substantial
experience on the implementation of MDR-TB
treatment within the Region. Invited facilitators from outside the Region
included experts from The Philippines, Germany,
WHO, HQ, and the Global Drug Facility. Participants shared experiences from
pilot DOTS-Plus projects in Nepal,
New Delhi, and Bangladesh,
and discussed plans for accelerating the response to the threat of
drug-resistant tuberculosis. Field visits to the LRS Institute of Chest
Diseases, New Delhi, highlighted
the complexities of trying to deliver complicated treatment for MDR
TB in resource-limited settings. During group work, participants applied the
knowledge learned and lessons from shared experiences and developed next
steps for inclusion in their national country plans for the management of MDR-TB.
