Burden of Leprosy

Burden of Leprosy in the Region

As on July 2006, the Regional leprosy prevalence rate (PR) was 0.82 per 10,000 population, with 137,224 registered cases under treatment. The PR has steadily declined from 4.6/10,000 population in 1996 to 0.82/10,000 in July 2006. The new case detection has also declined from a peak of 47.8/100,000 in 1998 to 11.9/100,000 as of March 2006.

The SEA Region, including India achieved the goal of elimination of leprosy as a public health problem (i.e. prevalence <1 case per 10,000 population) in December 2005. Prevalence and new case detections have declined dramatically in most countries of the Region.

Burden of Leprosy in India

India achieved the elimination goal, at the national level, as of December 2005.

As of July 2006, there were 99,255 registered leprosy cases on treatment, giving a Prevalence Rate (PR) of 0.88 per 10,000 population. The number of new cases detected during the year 2005 was 168,186.

Out of the 35 States/Union Territories, 23 States and four Union Territories have achieved the elimination goal. The remaining six states and two Union Territories are making concerted efforts and are likely to achieve the elimination goal by the end of 2006 or 2007.
