Malaria Epidemics / Outbreaks in SEA Region

The last major epidemic occurred in 1993. Many focal epidemics occur each year. Some of these are not even reported. The country has developed plans to strengthen epidemic preparedness and response at national, district and Upazila levels through development of capacity. Year-wise recent reported outbreaks/epidemics and places affected are as under:-

2002    Banderban, Rangmati, Khagrachari (around 16000 (clinical) cases with 177 deaths)

2004    Chittagong, Netrakona, Cox’s Bazar (Total affected population were 4.1, 2.2 and 1.9 million respectively,  lab confirmed cases 2813, 182 and 5531 respectively and reported malaria deaths were 25, 10 and 168 respectively)

2005    Netrakona (1087 cases and 14 deaths).
