World Health Organization Regional Office for South-East Asia

Regional Yaws Situation

*     India

*     Indonesia

*     Timor-Leste

Yaws remains one of the most neglected tropical diseases affecting primarily the poorest and most vulnerable population. It continues to be a focalized problem affecting parts of only three countries (Indonesia, Timor Leste and India) in South East Asia Region. With availability of cost effective tools to detect and cure the disease, the Region is planning or eradication of yaws by 2012. India might be achieving yaws eradication earlier.

WHO launched the Global Yaws Control Programme in 1948, in collaboration with UNICEF. At that point, more than 30 countries worldwide were endemic for yaws.

From 1950-1970, mass Penicillin treatment campaigns were successfully implemented in most yaws endemic countries and prevalence of endemic treponematoses, including yaws, dramatically declined.

In 1970, surveillance phase was declared. In many countries, the mobile teams which conducted yaws treatment campaigns were dismantled and efforts made to incorporate yaws control into general health services. Since then, yaws has remained as a public health problem in a few pockets, including three countries in the SEA Region - India ,Indonesia and Timor-Leste
