2009 Respiratory Disease Activity SEA Region Week 25th of 2009 to 4th January 2010

Overall clinical respiratory disease activity has declined South East Asia over the past two weeks.  Five SEAR countries India, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and DPRK continue to report cases of pandemic influenza A.  Sentinel specimens from Thailand reported 12/48 (25%) samples from pneumonia patients tested positive for pandemic influenza A (H1N1), as did 37/131 (28%) from ILI patients. The proportion of ILI patients among total hospital outpatient visits was above 5% in 9/76 provinces indicating widespread ILI activity in these provinces.

Pandemic Phases

What is phase 6?

Phase 6, the pandemic phase, is characterized by community level outbreaks in at least one other country in a different WHO region in addition to the criteria defined in Phase 5. Designation of this phase indicates that a global pandemic is under way.
