Since 3 January 2010, Bureau of Epidemiology has introduced hospital-based ILI surveillance system using the proportion of ILI patients among total hospital OPD patients in a week as a warning indicator of the situation in the area.

*         Proportion of higher than 5% means - wide-spread situation.

*         Proportion is higher than 10%- area will need to implement containment measures.

 As of 23 January 2010, 743 hospitals both public and private were registered to participate in this surveillance system. The ILI proportion of higher than 5% was reported from 9 provinces.

 Pandemic H1N1 sentinel surveillance: 

From 2010, the Bureau of Epidemiology (BoE) is utilizing the data from sentinel surveillance conducted by the National Influenza Centre of the Department of Medical Sciences (DMSc) and by the Bureau of Epidemiology, Department of Disease Control (DDC) for monitoring of the pandemic H1N1 situation.

 

*         DMSc: - 49 throat swab samples of ILI patients were collected from OPD of ten public and private hospitals in 8 provinces, Pandemic influenza A (H1N1) virus were found in 14 samples (28.57%). The viruses were found in Central, Northeastern, and Southern regions of the country.

 

*          DDC: - 82 throat swab samples from ILI patients were collected from thirteen hospitals. 23(28.05%) samples were found positive for Pandemic (H1N1)2009. These were from central, northeastern, and northern regions of the country. 

 

*         48 throat swab samples were collected from pneumonia patients, 12 samples were found positive for Pandemic (H1N1)2009(25%), they were found from Central, Northeastern and Northern regions of the country.

 

Cluster Outbreaks of Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 this week:  During the week (25-31 January 2010) two outbreaks were reported.

 

Lamphun: On 15th January 2010, Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 was reported from a school at Chom Thong community hospital. Till 25th January 2010, 28 (22.5%) students from the school reported with ILI.  Active case search was conducted by the village health volunteers in the community. 

 

Lampang: On 16th January 2010, Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 was reported from a school. 33 students of the school reported with ILI.  Five throat swab samples were tested positive for Pandemic (H1N1) 2009.Containment measures were taken.
