Dengue Outbreak in the Maldives

Dengue Outbreak in the Maldives

A total of 311 dengue cases, including two deaths have been reported in the Maldives in the period 1 January -19 February 2011.  The highest number of cases was reported during the 5th week (65cases).

Due to the increase in dengue cases in the Maldives since December 2010, various interventions have been taken by the Ministry of Health and Family:

*      A health alert (press release) was released to create public awareness about precautions such as preventing bites from the Aedes mosquito, increasing overall hygiene and eliminating breeding sites around the living area

*      All clinicians in male and the atolls were sent a circular on 27th December 2010 to be vigilant about detecting, diagnosing and managing all dengue and suspected dengue cases.

*      A special programme was organized on vector control activities.

*      Various teleconferences were held with clinicians, health workers and the media, to focus on preventive measures as well as effective case management.
