NATIONAL BASIC FACTS ON TOBACCO

*      41% of male and 1.8% of female adults (15+years) smoke daily[1]

*      14.8% of male and 24.4% of female adults (15+ years) use smokeless tobacco daily[2]

*      5.8% students (13-15 years) currently use any form of tobacco (cigarette smoking 1.8%, other tobacco 4.0% -Dhaka)[3]

*      More than 57 thousand people die due to tobacco use annually

*      Nearly 1.2 million people suffer from vascular diseases, cancer Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and TB due to tobacco use annually

*      Annual revenue collected from tobacco products is 33.7% takas, whereas the annual cost of tobacco-related illnesses attributable to tobacco usage is estimated at 50.9 billion takas including 5.8 billion takas for second hand smoking

*      10 million people currently malnourished could have an adequate diet if money spent on tobacco were spent on food instead

*      Bangladesh is a party to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC)

*      Bangladesh has a comprehensive tobacco control legislation.
