In Nepal, as of 08 May 2006 a total of 176 suspect JE cases have been reported, of which 7 died (CFR 4%) in 2006.
In 2005, a total of 2824 suspect JE cases were reported, of which 316 died (CFR 11.2%). Of these, 1769 cases and 233 deaths occurred in the western, mid-western and far-western regions of Nepal. WHO is working closely with the national authorities and providing technical support.
In India, as of 10 November 2005, a total of 5737 suspect Japanese Encephalitis (JE) cases reported from Uttar Pradesh (including 420 cases and 99 deaths from Bihar residents). They also report 1334 deaths (case fatality rate of 23.3%) since the outbreak started in July 2005. An additional 360 cases and 64 deaths (CFR 17.8%) have been reported from the adjoining state of Bihar.
The Government has intensified vector control measures (both antilarval and anti adult) and distributed 200,000 mosquito nets. A plan for immunizing children between the ages of 1-12 years is being drawn up for the next year.
WHO continues to closely monitor the situation and is providing technical and logistic support especially in the area of vaccines, supply of diagnostic reagents and on vector control measures.
