Education and Training Support (ETS) Unit in
the Regional Office, among others, is the focal point for matters relating to
WHO fellowships.
One of
the ways in which WHO endeavours to achieve its
Constitutional aims is through its Fellowship Programme, which provides
opportunities through group or individual training and study in:
health matters which may not be available in
the candidate’s own country (such training will be provided abroad or through
a distance learning);
the international exchange of scientific
knowledge and transfer of technology;
Specialist training in the candidate’s own
country where suitable facilities exist.
The Fellowship Programme has always been
accorded the highest importance by the Member States of WHO.
It is recognized as one of the most effective means whereby Member States
develop human resources to support health system to provide effective health
care services. The implementation of fellowship constitutes a joint
undertaking by WHO, the host country, the fellow and the government, in terms
of arrangements, host acceptance, utilization of services of the fellow, etc. The related information
documents and FAQs provide relevant details to the fellows and the national authorities. The relevant fellowship
forms can be downloaded for use. Also the applicable stipend
rates and travel related information will
give a clear idea to the fellow as well as the national authorities of the
various options and information.
In order to further improve and accelerate the placement operations, an important initiative in the form of web-based WHO Regional Directory of Training Institutions, has
been launched. This technology driven exercise is expected to make the
data availability on training institutions, easier, user-friendly, dynamic,
interactive, transparent and on-line.
ETS Unit also compiles the Meetings
organized by WHO SEARO with a view to disseminate
the information on the various activities taking place in the countries of
the Region and the Regional Office.
