Avalanche and floods in Seti
River, Kaski district, Nepal
On 05 May, 2012, at around 0930 hrs an avalanche in the Annapurna Mountains
caused floods in the Seti river, Kaski district of the Western Development
Region (WDR) in Nepal.
As of 09 May 2012, 26 people have been reported killed and 44 persons are
missing including three Ukrainian tourists. A total of 14 families have
been displaced It is reported that 20 houses, two temples, one community
building have been swept away by the flood in Tatopani and Machhapuchhre
Village Development Committee (VDC) and half of a kilometer of the road
section, two suspension bridges, water supply system to the Pokhara valley
(which supplies around 60 percent of water supply in the valley) and
electric poles have been damaged. District Disaster Relief Committee (DDRC)
and Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS) have provided the immediate cash and
Non-Food Item (NFI) to support to the flood affected families and the
families of the deceased. Government send emergency rescue, relief and
response teams to the disaster sites open command post and provided
emergency supplies to the affected communities. WHO team collaborating with
the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division (EDCD) of the Department of
Health services (DoHS), Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) at the
central level and supporting the District Public Health Office’s (DPHO)
ongoing efforts in responding to the emergencies. WHO EHA staff member
joined the Government led information verification and assessment team in
the affected areas.
