Indonesia Earthquakes 

Indonesia affected by recurring earthquakes

On Monday, 18 December 2006, at 04:39:20 local time (21:39:20 GMT Sunday), an earthquake measuring 6 on the Richter scale occurred in the North Sumatra Province of Indonesia. The quake followed just half an hour after a 5.8-magnitude earthquake hit the north of Sumatra. The worst hit villages are located in Muarasipongi Sub-district, Mandailing Natal (Madina) District, North Sumatra, approximately 1,100 km (680 miles) northwest of the capital Jakarta. According to the Provincial Health Office (PHO), 4 people died while 7 were heavily injured and 25 were lightly injured. 589 people were displaced and were evacuated to the old Mandailing Natal District Office. Key roads connecting North and West Sumatra were blocked by landslides triggered by the quake, which made 20 villages out of 23 in the worst-hit district of Muara Sipongi inaccessible and hampered rescue operations. The earthquake damaged 747 houses in 23 villages in Muara Sipongi Sub-district, as well as 5 schools, 6 mosques and 1 health post and disrupted electricity supplies in many areas. The Government initiated search and rescue operations supported by the Military, police and local volunteers, assessment of the situation and distributed 50 tons of rice to the affected households. The Ministry of Health carried out a rapid assessment, and North Sumatra Public Health Office has sent medical teams and 4 emergency kits for the disaster affected area as well as  bed nets and quick water cleaner (PAC) for the displaced people.

 

On 1 December 2006, an earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale occurred in West Nusa Tenggara Region of Indonesia. The earthquake took place in the evening, at 21:01 Western Indonesia Time Zone. In the region, Bima town, which is located 1350 km South East of the capital Jakarta, suffered the most damage as around 20 houses collapsed, and 14 people were injured. All patients have been treated at Bima General Hospital. According to the Head of the Crisis Centre of the Ministry of Health, Emergency Officials searched the area. This earthquake followed only days after another earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale affected North Maluku Province on Wednesday 29 November 2006. The earthquake took place in the morning at 08:32 am. The damage following the earthquake was limited. While no reports have been received on any people killed or injured in the event, physical damages to one mosque, two schools, and some houses have been reported from two villages
