Location

The worst hit villages are located in Muarasipongi Sub-district, Mandailing Natal (Madina) District, North Sumatera, approximately 1,100 km (680 miles) northwest of the capital Jakarta.

Background

The Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMG) reported that an earthquake measuring 6 on the Richter Scale occurred in the North Sumatera Province on Monday, 18 December 2006, at 04:39:20 local time (21:39:20 GMT Sunday). The epicentre of the quake was approximately 150 kilometers (95 miles) southeast of Sibolga, North Sumatra Province, at a relatively shallow depth of 17.7 kilometers.

 

Based on reports from the local disaster mitigation team, the worst-affected area was Kota Rojo village in Mandailing Natal, where hundreds of houses were destroyed by the quake.

Impact and Casualties

According to the Provincial Health Office (PHO) report, 19 December 2006, 4 people died, 7 heavily injured and 25 lightly injured because of the earthquake.

Approximately 589 IDPs were evacuated to the old Mandailing Natal District Office.

The earthquake damaged 747 houses of 23 villages in Muarasipongi Sub-district, as well as 5 schools, 6 mosques and 1 puskesmas.

Electricity supplies had been cut off in several areas.

The earthquake has also damaged a 10-kilometer road connecting two villages in Muarasipongi as it was buried by soils and rocks sliding down from upper areas.

Problem Encounter

Landslides and rain that blocked the main roads were hampering rescue operations and food distribution efforts.

Many injured victims could not get prompt medical treatment and were being laid out on the streets beside the overload health centers.

 

Government Action

19 December 2006

*     A joint team of soldiers and National Police officers helped by local residents were still trying to open the road to the isolated area, Ranjau Batu Village.

*     The official said that 25 tents had been sent to help provide shelter for the IDPs.

 

18 December 2006

*     The Search and Rescue Teams, with support from the Military, Police personnel and local residents, continue the evacuation process.

*      Government has distributed 50 tons of rice to the affected households and continues to undertake the assessment.

 

MOH Action

19 December 2006

*     North Sumatera PHO dispatched a team of three carrying bed nets and quick water cleaner (PAC) for the IDPs.

 

18 December 2006

*     MOH deployed one staff to the affected area to do rapid assessment.

*     North Sumatera PHO had sent a medical team and dispatched 4 emergency kits to the disaster area.

 

Status of International Aid

No international assistance was requested as local government has the capacity to response to the situation.
