Mission, Objectives and Expected Results

 

*      Mission

Our mission is to support SEAR member countries to promote healthy lifestyles and environments for sustainable human development. this will be achieved by strengthening the capacity of countries to assess and modify behavioural, environmental, physical, social and economic determinants of human health

 

*      Objective of Food Safety

Promote the development of sound national policies and programmes for food safety, as well as assistance with implementation of these programmes. FOS fosters the capacity to detect, identify, control, and prevent food borne diseases, in order to reduce the health and social burden of foodborne disease.

 

*      Expected result in Food Safety

Food borne disease surveillance and food hazard monitoring programme strengthened

 

*      Objective of Promotion of Chemical Safety

Promote the sound management of chemicals by strengthening national and regional capabilities and capacities for chemical safety. This includes reducing toxic chemical exposure, improving the management of chemical accidents, reinforcing poison information centres, and standardizing the management of toxic and biomedical waste.

 

*      Expected results from the Promotion of Chemical Safety

Appropriate technology and logistic support provided for prevention, preparedness and response to chemical incidents and poisonings, radiation accidents and other technological or environmental emergencies

By end of 2005, regional capacities in chemical safety are strengthened by:

*     Nine National Chemicals Management Profiles have been revised /started

*     Health Care Waste Management (HCWM) programmes in 6 countries are being implemented

*     A regional collaborative CEH research network is functional

*     Poisoning prevention and management has been enhanced in fifteen centres in the region

*      5 Integrated Vector Management (IVM) pilot projects  have been launched
