Haemovigilance system to be introduced in health facilities

Hospital Service Management (Safe Blood Transfusion Program) of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) organized in December 2018 a two-day workshop centered on the introduction of haemovigilance (HV) system in health facilities.

The event, held at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, was technically supported by WHO Bangladesh and was attended by clinicians from public and private sector and health managers from DGHS.

The HV system is a mechanism which captures reactions and adverse events occurring during collection of blood from donors and during blood transfusion to patients.

The transfusion reactions and adverse events occur in hospitals but are not regularly reported, and therefore the information and documentation available at facilities and at national level is limited. A protocol for reporting of reactions was finalized in the workshop.

WHO supports the initiative of haemovigilance and will continue to provide technical support for policy development related to reporting system in health facilities.
