World No Tobacco Day 2019
Dhaka, 20 June 2109 - The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW) together with WHO and health partners observed on the 20th of June The World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) 2019. The theme of this years’ WNTD is "tobacco and lung health" and the slogan is “Don’t let tobacco take your breath away - choose health not tobacco”. A national programme was held in Dhaka at the National Museum Auditorium to observe the day.
Attending the event, the Secretary - Health Services Division of the MOH&FW Mr. Mohammad Ashadul Islam reiterated government’s commitment for undertaking further steps to make Bangladesh tobacco free by 2040, in accordance with the vision of the Hon’ble Prime Minister of Bangladesh.
Dr Bardan Jung Rana, WHO Representative to Bangladesh, in his speech, called upon the Government to adopt a code of conduct to protect anti-tobacco policies from commercial and other vested interests of the tobacco industry. He also called for reforming the tobacco tax structure and to improve the capacity of the authorities to enforce the tobacco control law.
WNTD has been observed across the country by the government and various non-government organizations to raise awareness on the harmful and life-threatening effects of tobacco use and to discourage the use of tobacco in any form.
Estimate 10% of all deaths in Bangladesh are due to chronic respiratory diseases for which both first- and second-hand tobacco smoke are risk factors. Tobacco not only damages lung health but also vividly reduces both quality of life and life expectancy- which is preventable.
WHO Bangladesh remains committed to supporting Bangladesh to fully implement the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) and WHO MPOWER package to make Bangladesh tobacco free by 2040.
