Regional workshop for strengthening capacity and internal quality assurance for the SEAR measles and rubella laboratory network, Thimphu, Bhutan 15-20 August 2016
The six day Regional Workshop for strengthening capacity and internal quality assurance for the SEAR measles and rubella laboratory network, organized and supported by WHO SEARO began today at Hotel Ariya, Thimphu. The workshop was inaugurated by Lyonpo Tandin Wangchuk, Health Minister.
The regional workshop, attended by about 60 participants from the South East Region Member states, is organized to strengthen internal quality and capacity of laboratory network and to support case-based surveillance for measles and rubella in SEAR in line with global verification standard. The specific objectives of the workshop are:
- To review the status and capacity of the current laboratory network to meet the demands of the enhanced regional case based surveillance and reporting system
- To orient on the updated information and technology to enhance measles and rubella case confirmation including identifying source of transmission.
- To introduce internal auditing process and develop action plan for quality assurance.
Measles elimination is one of the six flagship priority areas of WHO SEAR, with the region adopting to target measles elimination by 2020. Bhutan has set the target for Measles elimination and control of Rubella by 2018.
This workshop represents an important step to ensure that the Royal CDC laboratory will have quality assurance program to maintain ‘Proficient laboratory’ status and to keep the national laboratory network updated on recent advances.
