The Ministry of Health of Indonesia has announced two new confirmed cases of human infection with the H5N1 avian influenza virus.
The first case was detected through routine ILI surveillance conducted by NIHRD in a 3 year old boy from East Jakarta. A specimen was taken in 2009 at the ILI site, but was not tested until January 2010, and was found to be H5 positive by RT-PCR. The child has since recovered. This makes the total number of cases in 2009 in Indonesia to 21, with 19 deaths.
The second case occurred in a 25 year old woman from South Jakarta. Preliminary information indicates she transported some chickens on 6th January 2010, and later on 15th January 2010 she was ill with fever. She went to hospital on 20th January, but died on 25th January. This is the first case and death in 2010 that has been notified.Contacts was placed under medical observation, where none developed illness. Laboratory tests confirmed the presence of the H5N1 avian influenza virus in both cases.
Of the 163 cases confirmed to date in Indonesia, 135 have been fatal.
