19 December 2008 – Bangladesh

On 16 December 2008, The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, Bangladesh confirmed that poultry in two commercials farms, one in Rajshahi district, in the northwestern part of the country bordering India and one located to the northeast of Dhaka, the capital, tested positive for H5N1.

As of 16 December 2008, a total of 291 outbreaks had been recorded in 47 districts out of 64 districts. The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, Government of Bangladesh, reported that a total of 1,645, 827 chickens have been culled.

So far, the first and only human case of H5N1 infection occurred in January 2008.

16 December 2008 – India

Avian Influenza in West Bengal and Assam, India

West Bengal

The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, GOI has notified Avian Influenza Outbreak in Englishbazar block, Malda District of West Bengal on 15.12.2008. Containment measures have been instituted and microplan is being developed. The active surveillance in 0-3 Km would start on 17.12.2008. The State Govt has been provided with ventilators, PPE and Oseltamivir during the last outbreak the stock of which is available with them. Additional 5000 capsules of Tamiflu has been kept at Regional Director office of MOHFW, Kolkata.

Assam

The Department of Animal Husbandry had notified avian influenza in Block Gobardhana, Barpeta District and Block West Nalbari, Nalbari District (on 4.12.08) in Rani and Rampur block of Kamrup district (01.12.2008) and Hajo block of Kamrup district (27.11.08). Further outbreaks have been notified on 10.12.2008 in Block Sidli Chirang [District Chirang] and Bezera, Guwahati Municipality [District Kamrup] and Dibrugarh Municipality [District Dibrugarh].

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, India, has strengthened isolation facilities to admit and treat suspect cases. 30,000 capsules of Tamiflu, 9,000 surgical masks, 900 personal protective equipments, 300 N-95 masks and 8 ventilators have been supplied by MoHFW. Sufficient anti-viral drugs and PPE are in stock with the State Government.

There is no suspect case of human avian influenza.

15 December 2008 – India

Status Report of Avian Influenza in Assam, India

The Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries in the Agriculture Ministry has confirmed further outbreaks of avian influenza in Block Sidli Chirang (District Chirang) and Bezera, Guwahati Municipality (District Kamrup) and Dibrugarh Municipality (District Dibrugarh). This is in addition to earlier outbreaks in Block Gobardhana, Barpeta District and Block West Nalbari, Nalbari District (on 4.12.08) in Rani and Rampur block of Kamrup district (01.12.2008) and Hajo block of Kamrup district (27.11.08).

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, India, has strengthened isolation facilities to admit and treat suspect cases. 15,000 capsules of Tamiflu, 9,000 surgical masks, 900 personal protective equipments, 300 N-95 masks and five ventilators have been supplied by MoHFW. Another 5,000 capsules of Tamiflu has reached the affected area on 14.12.2008.

There is no suspect case of human avian influenza.

11 December 2008 – India

Fresh outbreak of poultry AI in India

The Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries in the Agriculture Ministry has confirmed of a fresh outbreak of High Pathogenic Avian Influenza (H5N1) in Barpeta, Nalbari and Kamrup districts in India’s north east state of Assam. The High Security Animal Disease Laboratory of Bhopal confirmed the outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1. Local authorities have started culling within the five-km radius of the infected villages. The situation is being monitored.

Between January and May this year, 42 incidents of bird flu were reported from West Bengal and Tripura.

9 December 2008 - Indonesia

The Ministry of Health of Indonesia has announced two new confirmed cases of human infection with the H5N1 avian influenza virus. A 9-year-old female from Riau Province developed symptoms on 7 November and was hospitalized on 12 November. She recovered and was discharged from hospital on 27 November. Laboratory tests confirmed the presence of the H5N1 avian influenza virus. Investigations into the source of her infection indicate poultry deaths at her home on 2 November.

The second case, a 2-year-old female from East Jakarta, developed symptoms on 18 November, was hospitalized on 26 November and died on 29 November. Laboratory tests have confirmed infection with the H5N1 avian influenza virus. Initial investigations into the source of her infection suggest exposure at a live bird market.

Of the 139 cases confirmed to date in Indonesia, 113 have been fatal.

8 December 2008 – Bangladesh

On 29 September 2008 a layer farm in Naogaon District tested positive for H5N1 after 750 out of 1,100 pullets died.  Fresh outbreak of poultry AI was confirmed on 2 December 2008 in northern district of Rangpur. On 28 November 2008, farmers reported unusual poultry mortality to the District Veterinary Officer. Samples tested positive for Influenza A and samples have been submitted to the National Reference Laboratory for AI for sub-typing.

As of 3 December 2008, a total of 289 outbreaks had been recorded in 47 districts out of 64 districts. The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, Government of Bangladesh, reported that culling of poultry has taken place in 549 farms. A total of 1,637,847 chickens have been culled.

So far, the first and only human case of H5N1 infection occurred in January 2008.

5 December 2008 – India

Fresh outbreak of poultry AI in India

The Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries in the Agriculture Ministry has notified to OIE a fresh outbreak of High Pathogenic Avian Influenza (H5N1) in Hajo block of Kamrup district in Assam where more than 300 poultry birds have died since 21 November. High Security Animal Disease Laboratory of Bhopal confirmed the outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1. Local authorities have started culling within the five-km radius of the infected villages. The situation is being monitored. Between January and May this year, 42 incidents of bird flu were reported from West Bengal and Tripura. OIE recognized India as a HPAI free country only two weeks ago.

10 September 2008 - Indonesia

The Ministry of Health of Indonesia has retrospectively announced two confirmed cases of human infection with the H5N1 avian influenza virus. The first case, a 38 year old male from Tangerang Municipality, Banten Province developed symptoms on 4 July 2008, was hospitalized on 9 July and died on 10 July. There were free roaming poultry throughout his neighbourhood, including a commercial poultry pen owned by a neighbour.

The second case, a 20 year old male from Tangerang District, Banten Province developed symptoms on 20 July, was hospitalized on 29 July, and died on 31 July. Reports indicate that chickens from the case's household had died in the week preceding the onset of his symptoms and that he had slaughtered and consumed some of his stock during this period.

Of the 137 cases confirmed to date in Indonesia, 112 have been fatal.

19 June 2008 - Indonesia

The Ministry of Health of Indonesia has announced two new cases of human H5N1 avian influenza infection. The cases are not linked epidemiologically. The first is a 16-year-old female from South Jakarta, DKI Jakarta Province developed symptoms on 7 May, was hospitalized on 12 May and died on 14 May. Investigations into the source of her infection indicate exposure to sick and dead poultry.

The second case is a 34-year-old female from Tangerang District, Banten Province who developed symptoms on 26 May, and was hospitalized on 2 June and died on 3 June. Investigations into the source of her infection are ongoing.

Of the 135 cases confirmed to date in Indonesia, 110 have been fatal.

18 June 2008 – Bangladesh

28 May 2008 -- The Ministry of Health, Bangladesh has confirmed its first case of human infection with H5N1 avian influenza. The case was identified retrospectively as part of seasonal surveillance activities run by the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B).

The case is a 16-month-old male from Komalapur, Dhaka. He developed symptoms on 27th January 2008 and subsequently recovered. The case was confirmed as being infected with A(H5N1) by the WHO H5 Reference Laboratory, US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The case was exposed to live and slaughtered chickens at his home. Specimens have been collected from his family members and neighbours. All remain healthy to date.

(Dhaka, Gazipur, Narayangonj, Tangail, Jamalpur, Jessore, Noakhali, Gaibandha, Magura, Rajbari, Nilfamari, Dinajpur, Rangpur, Joypurhat, Lalmonirhat, Thakurgaon, Naogaon, Bogra, Feni, Pabna, Kurigram, Moulvibaza, Barisal, Barguna, Rajshahi, Natore, Patuakhali, Netrokona, Bhola, Kulna, Manikgonj, Gopalgonj, Mymensingh, Sylhet, Kustia, Jhinaidah, Norsingdhi, Bagerhat, Chittagong, Kishoreganj, Meherpur, Comilla, Shariatpur, Munshiganj Chandpur, Satkhira and B Baria.) A total of 1,637,266 chickens have been culled.

4 June 2008 – India

West Bengal [Kurseong Block of Darjeeling District notified on 09.05.2008 and Bijanbari Block, Darjeeling District on 16.05.2008]

A population of 34,743 in the 0-3 Km area and a population of 815 in the 3-10 km area are under active surveillance. A total of 3 cases of fever and upper respiratory tract infection in 0-3 km have been detected. None of them had contact with sick/ dead poultry. No case was detected in the 3-10 km area.

In the identified health facility 3 cases with fever/URI have reported and one of them is under observation.

87 Cullers / Veterinary staff are under medical observation and continue to be on chemoprophylaxis with oseltamivir

I.E.C. activities are continuing. There is adequate stock of oseltamivir and PPE with the District authorities. There is no suspect case of human avian influenza.

29 May 2008 – Bangladesh

West Bengal

Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries, Govt. of India has notified Avian Influenza in poultry in Village Painakumari, Kurseong Block of Darjeeling District, West Bengal today.

MOHFW has requested the state government to deploy the state RRT. A two member Central Team is being deputed to assist the state in containment operations.

Tripura

District West Tripura

Village Nadilak, Block Bishalgarh [outbreak notified on 24.4.2008]

Central RRT is assisting the State authorities. House to house surveillance by health workers is continuing. A population of 20229 has been covered in 0-3 Km area.. 28 cases of fever/URI have been detected in the community and five cases have been reported to the identified health facility. None of them had exposure history to infected poultry.

153 Animal Health Workers are under medical supervision and are under chemoprophylaxis.

Village Hatearra; Block: Mohanpur [outbreak notified on 21.4.2008]

Central RRT is assisting the State authorities. Active house to house surveillance is continuing. A population of 24499 has been covered in 0-3 Km area and 17707 in 3-10 Km area. 118 cases of fever/ URI have been detected in the community. None of them had exposure history to infected poultry.

66 Animal Health Workers are under medical supervision and are under chemoprophylaxis.

There is no suspect case of human avian influenza.

No fever/cases have been detected in the community. In the identified hospital one case with fever/URI has reported. He had no exposure history to infected poultry.

158 Animal Health Workers are under medical supervision and are under chemoprophylaxis.

The Central Rapid Response Team is assisting the State authorities. Active house to house surveillance is continuing. A population of 24540 has been covered in 0-3 Km area and a population of 1436 has been covered in 3-10 Km area. In total 28 cases of fever/ URI have been detected in the community. None of them had exposure history to infected poultry.

129 Animal Health Workers are under medical supervision and are under chemoprophylaxis. There is adequate stock of Tamiflu .There is no suspect case of human avian influenza.

30 April 2008 -- The Ministry of Health of Indonesia has announced a new case of human infection of H5N1 avian influenza. A 3-year-old male from Wonogiri District, Central Java Province developed symptoms on 14 April, was hospitalized on 21 April and died on 23 April. Investigations into the source of his infection indicate exposure to sick and dead poultry.

Of the 133 cases confirmed to date in Indonesia, 108 have been fatal.

22 April 2008 – Bangladesh

As of 22 April 2008, the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, Government of Bangladesh, reported that culling of poultry has taken place in 546 farms, spread over 47 districts. 19 April 2008- India

Tripura – 19 April

District Dhalai [outbreak notified on 7.4.2008]

The Central Rapid Response Team from MOHFW is assisting the State authorities in containment operations.

Active house to house surveillance is continuing. The health teams have covered a population of 11803 in the 0-3 km zone. Details on the number of the fever/URI cases is awaited but it has been confirmed telephonically that there is no suspect case of human avian influenza detected through active surveillance.

200 Animal Health Workers involved in containment operations are under medical supervision and chemoprophylaxis.

16 April 2008- India

West Bengal (as of 15th April 2008)

Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries has notified outbreak of Avian Influenza in poultry in Block Ranaghat II [Village: Mandalpukur, Kalitala], Nadia District of West Bengal on 4th April, 2008. Active house-to-house surveillance is continuing. In the 0-3 km Zone the teams have covered a population of 1,68,288 and in the 3-10 km area, a population of 1,99,700 was covered. No person with fever/URI were detected in the zones. There are no fever/URI cases detected or admitted in the identified hospitals. There are adequate stocks of PPE and Oseltamivir with the State Health authorities.

Tripura (as on 12th April 2008]

Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries has notified outbreak of Avian Influenza in poultry in Block Salema [Village: Mohanpur], district Dhalai of Tripura on 7.4.2008. The Central Rapid Response Team from MOHFW is assisting the State authorities in containment operations. MOHFW has supplied 500 Personal Protective Equipments, 200 N-95 masks, 5000 capsules of Tamiflu and 2 ventilators. Active house-to-house surveillance is continuing. The health teams have covered a population of 11803 in the 0-3 km zone and a population of 24923 in the 3-10 km Zone. A total of 17 cases of fever/URI were detected in the surveillance [4 in the 0-3 km area and 13 in the 3-10 km zone.] but none of them had history of exposure to infected poultry. There is no suspect case of human avian influenza. In the identified hospital with isolation facilities, 16 cases with fever/URI have reported. None of them had exposure to infected poultry. One person with fever/URI is admitted. There is no suspect case of human avian influenza. 221 Animal Health Workers involved in containment operations are under medical supervision and chemoprophylaxis. IEC activities are being undertaken through pamphlets, miking etc.

10 April 2008- India

India’s Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries has notified outbreak of Avian Influenza in poultry in Block Salema [Village: Mohanpur], district Dhalai of Tripura on 7.4.2008.

The Central Rapid Response Team from MOHFW is assisting the State authorities in containment operations.

MOHFW has supplied 500 Personal Protective Equipments, 200 N-95 masks, 5000 capsules of Tamiflu and 2 ventilators.

Active house to house surveillance in 0-3 Km area is continuing. The health teams have covered a population of 1923 and there is no suspect case of human avian influenza. In the identified hospital 21 cases with fever/URI have reported. None of them had exposure to infected poultry. 138 Animal Health Workers involved in containment operations are under medical supervision and chemoprophylaxis.

Adequate stock of Oseltamivir, personal protective equipments are available with the State/district authorities.

There is no suspect case of human avian influenza.

3 April 2008- India

The Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries has notified of no further outbreak of Avian Influenza among poultry in Jalpaiguri district after 27th March, 2008. In the affected area of Jalpaiguri district active house to house surveillance is continuing in 0-3 Km area. A population of 29253 has been covered. 9 cases of fever/URI have been identified in the community. None of them had exposure to infected poultry. 228 animal health workers are under medical supervision and chemoprophylaxis. In the earlier notified area of Malda district, in 0-3 Km area a population of 220007 has been covered. One case of fever/URI have been detected. None of them had exposure to infected poultry. 219 animal husbandry workers who were involved in containment operations are under medical supervision and chemoprophylaxis. One person is under observation. There is no suspect case of human avian influenza and the situation is being monitored.

2 April 2008 - Indonesia

The Ministry of Health of Indonesia has announced three new cases of human H5N1 avian influenza infection. The cases are not linked epidemiologically. The first is a 15-year-old male student from Subang District, West Java Province who developed symptoms on 19 March, was hospitalized on 22 March and died on 26 March .

The second case is an 11-year-old female student from Bekasi City, West Java Province who developed symptoms on 19 March, was hospitalized on 23 March and died on 28 March.

The third case is a 21-month-old female from Bukit Tinggi, West Sumatra Province who developed symptoms on 17 March, and was hospitalized on 22 March. She is presently recovering in hospital.

The source of infection for all three cases is still under investigation.

Of the 132 cases confirmed to date in Indonesia, 107 have been fatal.

2 April 2008 – Bangladesh

As of 2 April 2008, the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, Government of Bangladesh, reported that culling of poultry has taken place in 537 farms, spread over 47 districts. 17 March 2008- India

Apart from the notification issued by Department of Animal Husbandry on 9th March, 2008 regarding outbreak of H5 in Jiaganj and Raghunathganj-II blocks of Murshidabad, no further outbreak has been notified.

For Raghunathganj-II the Jangipur Sub-divisional hospital has been identified with isolation facilities. For Jiaganj a new isolation facility has been created in Jiaganj Rural Hospital. In the hospital 20 fever/URI cases have reported. None of them had exposure history to infected poultry. The situation is being monitored.

The Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries, Govt. of India has confirmed an outbreak of H5 strain of Avian Influenza in Murshidabad District of West Bengal.

In this connection, it has been decided that all poultry will be culled within a radius of 5 kilometers of the focus which lie in two blocks, namely Jiagang and Raghunathganj II. In addition to the culling strategy mentioned, surveillance will be carried out in a further radius up to 10 kilometers.

Adequate stock of Oseltamivir (the drug required for prevention and treatment), and personal protective equipments were made available to West Bengal and other States.

12 February 2008- India

The Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries, Govt. of India has confirmed that the number of affected districts remain the same. Avian Influenza outbreaks in poultry have occurred in 14 districts, namely Birbhum, Dakshin Dinajpur, Murshidabad, Nadia, Bankura, Burdwan, Maldah, Coochbehar, Hooghly, Howrah, Purulia, South and North 24 Parganas and Paschim Medinipore.

The GOI has decided to create a 5km poultry free zone bordering the States Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand and Orrisa. This measure is being undertaken to create a buffer zone and prevent spread of avian influenza into other States.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has supplied 4,20,000 capsules of Tamiflu, 6500 personal protective equipments, 6500 N-95 masks and 20 ventilators and 150 bottles of Tamiflu syrup. 27 biological samples have been tested for Avian Influenza. All of them tested negative

21 February 2008 - Indonesia

The Ministry of Health of Indonesia has announced two new cases of human H5N1 avian influenza infection. The first is a 16-year-old male from Sragen district, Central Java Province who developed symptoms on 3 February, was hospitalized on 7 February and died on 10 February. Prior to his illness, the case was exposed to sick and dead poultry at his home, where he slaughtered a sick chicken.

The second case is a 3-year-old boy from South Jakarta District, Jakarta Province who developed symptoms on 3 February, was hospitalized on 10 February and died on15 February. The investigation team found that chickens & a pet bird had died in the neighborhood in the two weeks prior to the case’s onset of symptoms.

Of the 129 cases confirmed to date in Indonesia, 105 have been fatal.

18 Febraury 2008 - Bangladesh

As of 16 February 2008, the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, Government of Bangladesh, reported that culling of poultry has taken place in 265 farms, spread over 43 districts. Official reports state that a total of 1,787 persons with fever and URI were detected; of which 11 reported a history of exposure to sick/infected birds. No suspected human cases of Avian Influenza has been detected so far.

The resources under Pulse-Polio programme supported by WHO has been requested to conduct surveillance for reporting influenza like illness in the districts adjoining affected areas of West Bengal. This includes the bordering districts of Assam, Jharkhand, Bihar, Tripura and Orissa.

A two day training program for 20 physicians of Central Government Hospitals was conducted at NICD on the 1st and 2nd of February. This training for trainers included information on clinical management of human cases of A (H5N1), infection control and use of PPE and surveillance.

5 February 2008 - Indonesia

The Ministry of Health of Indonesia has announced two new cases of human H5N1 avian influenza infection. The first is a 29-year-old female from Tangerang City, Banten Province who developed symptoms on 22 January, was hospitalized on 28 January and died on 2 February. Investigations into the source of her infection are ongoing .

The second case is a 38-year-old female from West Jakarta, Jakarta Province who developed symptoms on 24 January 2008, was hospitalized on 26 January and is currently in hospital in a critical condition. Investigations into the source of her infection are ongoing.

Of the 126 cases confirmed to date in Indonesia, 103 have been fatal.

The Ministry of Health of Indonesia has announced the death of a previously confirmed case of H5N1 infection. The 32-year-old male from Tangerang Municipality, Banten Province died on 29 January.

Of the 124 cases confirmed to date in Indonesia, 101 have been fatal.

28 January 2008 - India

The Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries, Govt. of India has confirmed Avian Influenza outbreaks in poultry in 13 districts, namely Birbhum, Dakshin Dinajpur, Murshidabad, Nadia, Bankura, Burdwan, Maldah, Coochbehar, Hooghly, Howrah, Purulia, South 24 Parganas and Paschim Medinipore. Sample collected from the affected areas in all the districts are positive for the H5N1 strain of Avian Influenza in poultry. The outbreak areas have been identified and active surveillance is ongoing. There are Rapid Response Teams with personal protective equipment in outbreak areas. All districts bordering the outbreak areas have been alerted. Movement of poultry has been restricted and live bird markets have been closed. Culling operations are underway followed by necessary compensation efforts.

So far a total of 10 human samples have tested negative for Influenza virus by the National Institute of Communicable Diseases, Delhi. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has supplied 220,000 capsules of Tamiflu, 5000 personal protective equipments, 5000 N-95 masks, 20 ventilators and 150 bottles of Tamiflu syrup. A stock of 10,000 Tamiflu and 500 PPE is being sent to the States of Assam, Bihar and Jharkhand.

The ministry of Health and Family Welfare has initiated IEC campaigns to sensitize the community through the visual and print media.

The Ministry of Health in Indonesia has confirmed an additional four cases of human infection with the H5N1 avian influenza virus. Two of these cases were fatal. There is no evidence of an epidemiological link between the cases.

The first case, a 31-year-old female from East Jakarta, Jakarta Province, developed symptoms on 18 January, was hospitalized on 22 January and is currently in hospital. The investigation indicated that she visited a wet market where live poultry are sold three days prior to symptom onset.

The second case, a 9-year-old male from Depok Municipality, West Java, developed symptoms on 16 January, was hospitalized on 23 January and died on 27 January. Investigations into the source of his infection indicate that the case lived next door to a wet market where live poultry are sold.

The third case, a 32-year-old male from Tangerang Municipality, Banten Province, developed symptoms on 17 January, was hospitalized on 24 January and is currently in hospital. Investigations into the source of his infection are ongoing.

The fourth case, a 23-year-old female from East Jakarta, Jakarta Province, developed symptoms on 19 January, was hospitalized on 24 January and died on 27 January. Investigations into the source of her infection are ongoing.

Of the 124 cases confirmed to date in Indonesia, 100 have been fatal.

27 January 2008 – Thailand

On 27 January 2008, the Department of Livestock Development (DLD), Ministry of Agriculture, received reports of sick or dead poultry in three provinces – Nong Khai, Chiang Rai and Ratchaburi. All were backyard chickens. In all there are reports of sick or dead poultry pending investigation in 55 sub-districts of 28 provinces. H5N1 have been found at two locations – Village 3, Tambon Chum Saeng, Chum Saeng district, Nakhon Sawan province (confirmed on 22 Jan 08); and Village 7 Tambon Sak Lek, Sak Lek district, Pichit province (confirmed on 25 Jan 08). In Nakhon Sawan the outbreak was in farm chicken raised in a closed system while in Pichit it was in backyard chicken. The Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries, Govt. of India has notified Avian Influenza outbreaks in poultry in 9 districts, namely Birbhum, Dakshin Dinajpur, Murshidabad, Nadia, Bankura, Burdwan, Maldah, Coochbehar and Hooghly. Sample collected from the affected areas in all the districts are positive for the H5N1 strain of Avian Influenza in poultry. The outbreak areas have been identified and active surveillance is ongoing. There are Rapid Response Teams with personal protective equipment in outbreak areas. All districts bordering the outbreak areas have been alerted. Movement of poultry has been restricted and live bird markets have been closed. Culling operations are underway followed by necessary compensation efforts. So far a total of 5 human samples have tested negative for Influenza virus by the National Institute of Communicable Diseases, Delhi. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has supplied 1,20,000 capsules of Tamiflu, 5000 personal protective equipments, 5000 N-95 masks and 5 ventilators. This is in addition to 10 ventilators and 10 semi automatic analysers supplied earlier.

16 January 2008 - Bangladesh

As of 16 January 2008, the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, Government of Bangladesh, reported that culling of poultry has taken place in 97 farms, spread over 23 districts. (Dhaka, Gazipur, Jamalpur, Narayangonj, Tangail, Noakhali, Gaibandha, Jessore, Magura, Rajbari, Nilphamari, Dinajpur, Rangpur, Jaipurhat, Lalmonirhat, Thakurgaon, Naogaon, Bagura, Feni, Pabna, Kurigram, Moulvibazar and Barisal). Of these, 76 farms have confirmed H5 virus infection. A total of 293 067 chickens have been culled. No human cases have been reported.

15 January 2008 - Indonesia

The Ministry of Health of Indonesia has announced a new case of human infection of H5N1 avian influenza. A 32-year-old female from Tangerang District, Banten Province developed symptoms on 3 January 2008, was hospitalized on 9 January 2008 and died on 10 January. Investigations indicate the case had a history of close contact with birds and poultry in the week prior to her onset of symptoms.

Of the 118 cases confirmed to date in Indonesia, 95 have been fatal.

24 January 2008 - India

As of 15 January 2008, the Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries, Government of India, confirmed an outbreak of Avian Influenza in Birbhum District and South Dinajpur Districts of West Bengal. Sample collected from the affected areas in both districts are positive for the H5N1 strain of Avian Influenza in poultry. The outbreak areas have been identified and active surveillance is ongoing. There are Rapid Response Teams with personal protection equipment in outbreak areas. All districts bordering the outbreak areas have been alerted. Movement of poultry has been restricted and live bird markets have been closed. Necessary action has been taken for culling of fowls in the affected areas which will be followed by necessary compensation efforts.

A team from the National Institute of Communicable Diseases, Delhi, is already in the outbreak areas to put in place a human surveillance system.

Of these, 72 farms have confirmed H5 virus infection. A total of 289,420 chickens have been culled. No human cases have been reported..

11 January 2008 - Indonesia

The Ministry of Health of Indonesia has announced a new case of human infection of H5N1 avian influenza. A 16-year-old female from West Java Province developed symptoms on 30 December 2007, was hospitalized on 4 January 2008 and is currently in hospital. Investigations found a history of deaths in chickens in the case’s neighborhood in the two weeks preceding her onset of symptoms.

Of the 117 cases confirmed to date in Indonesia, 94 have been fatal.
