Last outbreak of poultry AI was reported on 28 May 2009. Outbreaks of poultry AI were reported in West Bengal and Sikkim in January 2009. The Department of Animal husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries, Government of India, has notified poultry AI outbreak in Mathegara block of Darjeeling district on 2nd January 2009. Poultry AI outbreaks were reported in Ravongla Municipality of Sikkim on 20 January 2009. There were reports of HPAI outbreaks in poultry in Uttar Dinajpur, Dakshin Dinajpur and Coochbehar districts of West Bengal from February to May 2009. Poultry culling with compensation was done for containment of poultry AI. Poultry in an area of 3-km-radius of the outbreaks is culled and surveillance is carried out in an area of 10-km-radius.

So far, no cases of human avian influenza have been reported from India.
