20 March 2006
Avian
influenza has been reported in poultry in the Sagaing
and Mandalay Divisions of Myanmar.
In February and March 2006, outbreaks of disease in
poultry were reported from four townships in Sagaing
Division, namely Shwebo, Kanbulu
and KhinU.
Of these, the avian influenza virus H5N1 has been found only in fowl
in KhinU Township, according to investigations by the
government of Myanmar. Pyigyidagun Township
in Mandalay Division also reported H5N1 in one of the dead fowls, following
outbreaks of disease in poultry since the second week of March.
The poultry samples were sent to the Thailand Veterinary
Centre, National Animal Health Laboratory, and the World Organization for
Animal Health (OIE) Animal Health Laboratory in Australia for identification of
the virus.
The Government of Myanmar has taken several measures to
contain the outbreak. Altogether 3427
fowls and 200 quails have been killed in 37 poultry farms and 2 quail farms
from the first week of February to the second week of March 2006. Another 5122 fowls were destroyed.
The affected townships have been declared restricted
zones, with a ban in movement of poultry and poultry products, as well as
equipment used in the control of the disease.
Fowl markets have been closed down temporarily. Destruction of poultry in the affected
areas is continuing.
Information and communication material on precautions to
be taken have been developed and distributed to the public by the government.
There have been no human cases of avian influenza in Myanmar to
date.
WHO is working closely with the government of Myanmar in
the development of avian influenza preparedness and response plans.
