Capacity Building

Regional Training of Trainers on National AIDS Programme Management, Bangkok, Thailand, 20 – 30 March 2007

The Regional Office (SEARO) AIDS Programme Manager Training: a new and revised version

The Regional Office recently produced an AIDS Programme Manager training course, the curriculum and teaching methods of which are based on a similar training conducted by the WHO Global Programme on AIDS in the early 1990s. Nine training modules (Box) were revised in 2006 by WHO taking into account the changes noticed in HIV situation and new developments in HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment.

The first such training was organized in Bangkok, Thailand from 20 to 30 March 2007. Twenty participants from seven countries in the Region attended the training. The participants comprised programme managers and senior staff working at national and provincial levels. The training was facilitated by a team of experts including experienced programme managers from across the Region, and WHO staff.

Participants evaluated the training course as being very useful and relevant to the needs of the programme. Countries presented plans to adapt and roll out the training at national and sub-national levels within 2007-2008 with support from WHO. The course has been found very relevant for use in all regions. In fact, WHO’s Regional Office for Africa has already expressed its interest in using the modules developed by the Regional Office for South-East Asia for imparting training in their region.
