Leprosy

Partnerships

The leprosy elimination programme is a successful model of well-functioning partnerships of all the important stake-holders – The national governments, WHO, World Bank, Bilateral/Multilateral donors and national/international NGOs (ILA, ILEP). Another major contributing factor has been the free supply of leprosy drugs to all endemic countries from 1995 to 2000 by The Nippon Foundation. The Novartis Foundation for Sustainable Development has assured the continuation of the free supply of leprosy drugs until 2010.

International NGOs

*      International Leprosy Association (ILA)

*      The International Federation of Anti-leprosy Associations (ILEP)

The World Bank

Donors

*      The Nippon Foundation

*      Sasakawa Memorial Health Foundation

*      Novartis Foundation for Sustainable Development

The programme has demonstrated that strong public-private coalitions built on wide ownership, equality of stakeholders, transparency of governance, shared credit, and recognition of respective roles and responsibilities goes a long way in achieving goals and success. There is need to further strengthen these partnerships and involve new partners as we progress from national to sub-national level elimination and further reduce the burden of leprosy.
