Legislation and Policy

Policy and research is an integral part of tobacco control. It is widely recognized that tobacco control in not only a health issue but also an issue of development as a whole. Incidentally all the mega countries of the region are both producers and manufacturers of tobacco and tobacco products.

Many countries in SEAR are currently in the process of developing comprehensive national tobacco control measures. Regional Office for South-East Asia supported countries to conduct studies on comprehensive national tobacco control. It is recognized that developing an effective tobacco control policies and strategies require both technical expertise and resources. Such policies and strategies cannot also be limited exclusively to the health area. Policies on both demand and supply side issues need to be addressed and included in all tobacco control strategies.
