Essential Drugs & Other Medicines (EDM) includes
Action programme on Essential Drugs (DAP), Drugs and biologicals, quality,
safety and efficacy (DSE) and Traditional medicine (TRM). The functions of
these programmes are:
 Development of national drug policies,
monitoring and revision; technical and financial support provided in order to
ensure establishment of national drug policies and their various components,
which are in tune with priorities in national health development. Main
thrusts of activities are in the areas of accessibility to essential drugs
and their rational use.
Strengthening of quality assurance of drugs
and biologicals; various activities in improving the quality, safety and
efficacy of essential drugs and EPI vaccines are supported through group
educational activities, consultancies and supplies and equipment.
Promotion of traditional medicine; improvement
in standardization, quality control and utilization of traditional remedies
are assisted. Use of traditional medicine (TRM) and deployment of TRM
practitioners in PHC are also supported.
Development and strengthening of human
resources; assistance is provided to improve the technical and managerial
capabilities in the various components of the national programmes
