WHO, present in all affected areas, is leading and
coordinating the Health Cluster response which comprises cooperation with
more than 30 UN agencies and INGOs. It works in
collaboration with the Ministry of Health of Myanmar who has requested WHO's
assistance in the provision and distribution of medical supplies to the
affected regions. Assessment teams have been sent to the delta region,
disease surveillance and preparatory measures are being undertaken for the
possible outbreak of water- and vector-borne diseases. WHO national staff in Myanmar
are delivering health emergency supplies and kits directly to the township
hospitals.
A Joint Action Plan for the Health Cluster in Myanmar is
currently being finalized. This plan will serve as the main roadmap and
coordination tool for health operations in Myanmar for the next six months.
We would like to encourage donors to continue their support so that WHO can
provide urgent assistance to the victims of Cyclone Nargis.
