WHO pays respect to those who lost their lives in the tsunami
One year after the tsunami, WHO SEARO pays respect to the memory of all those who lost their lives in the tragedy. It also salutes all those health worker
s, who, in spite of their personal tragedies, worked tirelessly for their communities in the aftermath of the disaster.
WHO speedboats to connect patients in remote Maldives islands
In the Maldives, WHO has handed over two speedboats to the Ministry of Health. They will be used for transport of patients, monitoring and supervision activities, and transport of supplies and equipments badly needed in remote islands.
The WHO South-East Asia Regional Office has recorded the health sector’s response to the tsunami in the publication ‘Moving Beyond the Tsunami: The WHO story’. The publication was launched by WHO Director-General Dr LEE Jong-wook during the 58th Regional Committee meeting in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
The Tsunami and After: WHO’s Role
– The aftermath of the tsunami presented a great public health challenge to WHO. Thousands of injured people needed medical aid urgently. In many areas, the health infrastructure was almost completely destroyed.
