Adolescent Mental Health
During transition from childhood to adulthood, adolescents' mental well-being is crucial. Adolescents must learn how to cope with psychological stress of growing up, deal with emotions, resolve conflicts, handle peer pressure, build bridges with friends and family, develop self-confidence, safegurad themselves from high pressure marketing strategies, particularly alcohol industry, as well as stress of academic competition.
Health sector must contribute to healthy development and wellbeing of adoelscents by providing information, counselling and contribute to development of life skills. The prevalence of certain mental health disorders like anxiety neurosis, depression and obsessive compulsive disorders is common in adolescence as is substance use. Adolescent Friendly Health Services should contribute to prevention, early detection and treatment of such disorders. Training materials to address these issues are being developed by WHO.
