In December 2015, the World Health Organization (WHO) officially certified the Republic of Maldives as the first malaria-free country in the South-East Asia Region. Maldives’ success in becoming and remaining malaria-free – with the last local malaria case recorded in 1984 – was achieved over many odds, owing to the culmination of years of concerted efforts by health workers and communities on dispersed islands, unwavering political will and the support of partners such as WHO. This booklet describes the Maldives’ journey to become and remain malaria free as an epic tale.
