In September 2016, the World Health Organization (WHO) officially certified the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka as the second country in the WHO South-East Asia Region to be malaria-free. Sri Lanka’s success in becoming and remaining malaria-free –with the last local malaria case recorded in October 2012- was achieved over many odds, owing to the culmination of years of concerted efforts by health workers and communities, unwavering political will and the support of partners such as WHO and the Global Fund. This booklet describes Sri Lanka’s journey to become malaria free and the steps taken to prevent re-establishment of malaria.
