World No Tobacco Day 2014: Raise taxes on tobacco

Every year, on 31 May, WHO and partners mark World No Tobacco Day, highlighting the health risks associated with tobacco use and advocating for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption. Tobacco kills nearly 6 million people each year, of which more than 600 000 are non-smokers dying from breathing second-hand smoke. For World No Tobacco Day 2014, we are calling on countries to raise taxes on tobacco.

Nepal’s initiative to use pictorial warnings on tobacco packages will save lives: WHO

27 April, Kathmandu, Nepal: The World Health Organization applauded Nepal’s initiative to provide pictorial health warnings covering 75% of all tobacco packages to warn users that tobacco kills. Over half of men (52%) use any kind of tobacco in Nepal. Nearly one in three (30%) smokes manufactured cigarettes, 7% uses other smoked products, and 35% uses smokeless tobacco products: all of which must now carry pictorial health warnings.

Thailand - Court decision paves the way to the resizing of graphic health warnings

June 2014: On 8 March 2013, Thailand’s Minister of Health, Dr Pradith Sinthawanarong, signed new regulations that require graphic health warnings to cover at least 85% of both sides of cigarette packages, up from 55%.

"Smoking Kills" the message delivered by WHO and MoH to the National Parliament

27 August 2014 - Dr. Jorge Mario Luna, WHO Representative, gave a presentation to National Parliament Committee “F” members and senior government advisors on the urgent need to take action in the fight against tobacco. Over 70 % of men use tobacco in Timor-Leste, which is one of the highest prevalence rates in the world.
