WHO Representative to India meets Union Health Minister

Dr Harsh Vardhan arrived at the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare on a bicycle to take charge as the Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare. He ascribed cycling to office as his ‘green good deed’ for the day and a great way to promote a healthy lifestyle.

Dr Henk Bekedam, WHO Country Representative met and congratulated Dr Harsh Vardhan at Nirman Bhawan today. Dr Bekedam discussed several priority areas of the government with the Union Health Minister including strengthening the implementation of the Ayushman Bharat programme; investing in a strong health workforce; and elimination of diseases such as tuberculosis, lymphatic filariasis and kala-azar, building on India’s successful campaign to make the country polio-free.

Dr Harsh Vardhan also presented Dr Bekedam with a copy of his book, A Tale of Two Drops (Kahani Do Boondon Ki), which documents the inspiring story of the visionary campaign to make India polio-free.

During the meeting, Dr Bekedam reinforced WHO’s commitment to continue partnering with the Government of India to build on the remarkable successes in public health that India has already demonstrated to the world.
