Polio Laboratory Network

A network of eight polio laboratories is involved in detection of poliovirus from stool samples collected from AFP cases and from sewage samples for environmental surveillance. Apart from these eight laboratories, one laboratory located in Bihar is exclusively involved in sewage sample processing. The polio laboratory in The Enterovirus Research Centre, Mumbai has been designated as a global specialized laboratory. These laboratories undergo an accreditation and proficiency test by WHO on an annual basis to assure the quality of results provided by them. Annually, more than 120 000 stool samples are tested by the polio laboratory network in India. The results from the laboratories in India have shown that no wild poliovirus has been detected in the country since January 2011.

The India polio lab network is an integral part of the Global Polio Laboratory Network.
