The South-East Asia Regional Certification Commission for Polio Eradication declared the South-East Asia Region of the World Health Organization (WHO) polio-free on 27 March 2014. The South-East Asia Region of WHO is the fourth Region to attain this distinction. It is a major milestone for the polio eradication programme in India, an unprecedented achievement for a country, which until 2009 accounted for more than half the world’s polio incidence. The last polio case was detected in January 2011. India was removed from the list of polio endemic countries by WHO in February 2012.
