Zika Virus Disease

On 1 February, WHO announced that the recent cluster of neurological disorders and neonatal malformations reported in the Americas region constitutes a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. This decision was made after the meeting of International Health Regulation Emergency Committee to gather advice on the severity of the health threat associated with the continuing spread of Zika virus disease in Latin America and the Caribbean. The causal link between this cluster and Zika virus disease is strongly suspected, constituting an “extraordinary event” and a public health threat to other parts of the world.
