Launching of the Health Emergency Operations Center in the Maldives
To further strengthen country preparedness, a Health Emergency Operations Center was launched in the Ministry of Health today with support from WHO, whom handed over all necessary equipment to establish the center. The handover document was signed by His Excellency Mr. Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim, Minister of Health and Dr Arvind Mathur, WHO Representative to the Maldives.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Health Minister said that acquiring the modern equipment will enhance the country’s capacity for emergency preparedness and response. He also mentioned that the law mandates the Ministry of Health to ensure the best and optimum response is provided to the nation during emergencies.
In his speech Dr. Mathur expressed WHO’s honor to be part of the capacity building of Ministry of Health and to serve the people of Maldives. He also highlighted that emergency preparation and response is a priority for the WHO and strengthening emergency capacity is essential to save lives.
Ministry of Health and WHO in the recent past have stepped up their effort to strengthen national capacity to plan and mage emergencies. The Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is a central command and control facility responsible for carrying out emergency preparedness and management. WHO’s support includes a MondoPad (smart touchscreen system for video conferencing), satellite communication equipment, and a mobile generator in addition to laptops and importantly training that has been provided to Ministry of Health team. This system can be connected to global satellites for coordination and information sharing and can remarkably operate on its own even at a time when other communication channels are down
The WHO Representative and the Country office team are committed towards continuing such support from WHO to the Government of Maldives.
