Inauguration of Adolescent and Youth friendly Health Services Clinic in Baa Eydhafushi
When the child reaches adolescent age, he/she undergoes many physical and psychological changes. If the youth is not fully aware of these changes, it is possible that they could face many health challenges in the future. To encourage awareness on these issues and maintain good health practices amongst youth, an Adolescent and Youth Friendly Health Services Clinic was inaugurated at Baa Eydhafushi, within Eydhafushi Regional Hospital.
The clinic was inaugurated by the Honorable Minister of Health HE Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim together with WHO Representative Dr Arvind Mathur. This is the third clinic opened for Adolescents by the Maldivian government. The first two were clinics opened in Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital and Dhamanaveshi Health Center in Male’.
Adolescent age is identified to be between ages 10 to 19 years old. Some of the services that will be provided from the clinic include medical checkups, administration of vaccines, consultation with doctors and provision of health information and counseling to the youth and their parents. Prior to the opening of the clinic, the Ministry of Health took the reins to train the staff at the Eydhafushi Regional Hospital with support from the WHO.
During WHO Representative Dr Arvind Mathur’s travel to Baa Atoll, he also had a site visit to Eydhafushi and Dharavandhoo Health Centers with accompanying WHO team members. The staff of the health care facilities had an opportunity to discuss with the team about the issues faced on the job and support needed from the WHO.
WHO continues to support the Ministry of Health and the government of Maldives to encourage, build and support such endeavors for the development of specific health priorities in the country.
