HE Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, the President of Republic of Maldives launches “Measles and Rubella Campaign 2017”
The measles campaign is being held in the country from 26 February to 11 March, 2017. All children in the age group of 8-14 years without evidence of the second dose of measles containing vaccine and all people in the age group of 15-25 years will be vaccinated with Measles and Rubella Vaccine.
National Immunization Programme, Ministry of Health with technical support from WHO, Maldives Technical Advisory Group on Immunization (MTAGI) and National Verification Committee (NVC) have conceptualized, planned and implemented the campaign as part of the broader work of validating measles elimination in the country. The Maldives has not reported any cases of measles since 2010.
To meet the elimination standards required for verification; Maldives Technical Advisory Group on Immunization (MTAGI) with WCO support led the review and updating of surveillance guidelines. A training of public health focal points from all atolls and islands have been conducted on these updated guidelines including familiarization with recording and reporting formats.
To address the potential outbreaks of Measles and Rubella in Maldives, Health Protection Agency (HPA) with guidance from MTAGI and technical support from WHO has developed outbreak preparedness and response plan.
Such concerted, cohesive and combined efforts certainly have fast tracked Measles Elimination in Maldives.
