2nd July 2018 – At an official ceremony held by the National Drug Agency, Government of Maldives on the occasion of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, WHO Maldives Country Office was awarded the Special Recognition Award for their extensive and exemplary support to National Drug Agency. The award was conferred on behalf of the Government by Honorable Vice President of the Maldives HE Abdulla Jihad.

The Maldives National Drug Agency provides drug prevention, treatment and rehabilitation for the drug users and effectively re-integrate them back to the society. In 2017, The National Drug Control Council decided to commence Neltrexone medication programme to replace the existing Methadone treatment. Technical assistance was sought from WHO which was facilitated by country office as together with regional office and HQ, it assisted NDA to establish Naltrexone treatment for management of Substance Use Disorders in Maldives based on the well accepted international standards and to provide evidence based service delivery.

WHO provided support to develop the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for Switching Patients on Methadone Maintenance Treatment (MMT) to Naltrexone Maintenance and SOP for Medication Assisted Treatment Using Naltrexone for Patients with Opioid Use Disorders.
