New WHO Country Representative Dr Arvind Mathur presents Credentials to HE Ms Dunya Maumoon, Minister of Foreign Affairs of The Republic of Maldives

Dr Arvind Mathur presented his letter of appointment to the Minister of Foreign Affairs HE Ms Dunya Maumoon on the morning of 13th October 2015. The Foreign Secretary of the Ministry Dr Ali Naseer Mohamed, Director General Ms Khadheeja Najeeha and some WHO officials were also present when the new WHO Representative paid a courtesy call on Minister Dunya at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During his visit, The Minister welcomed Dr Mathur and congratulated him on the commencement of his term in the country office. She thanked WHO for the important role the organization has played in improving the healthcare conditions across the country as well as the numerous contributions made in the past fifty years. Dr Mathur expressed his gratitude and committed to working closely with the government to reach new milestones in the Maldivian health sector.

Dr Mathur is an Indian national who has a long experience with the WHO South East Asia Regional Office and the Country Offices in India, DPR Korea, Sri Lanka and, most recently, Bangladesh.

Before joining WHO, Dr Mathur worked for several years with other International Organizations such as Aga Khan Foundation and CARE International. He is a Medical Graduate with a post-graduate degree in Community Medicine from LLRM Medical College, Meerut, India and received his diploma in the same field with specialization in Maternal and Child Health, with courses in Hospital Administration, Area Development and Management from the Asian Institute of Management, Manila, Philippines.

He has been actively involved in policy advocacy, programme management, relationship-building, partnership-development, and has provided technical assistance to Member States within the Region and beyond. At a global, regional and country level he has been an active contributor as a member on various Expert Groups and Task Force Teams to formulate and implement technical guidelines especially in maternal and reproductive health. He also worked as a Scientist with the Human Nutrition Unit of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India.

Dr Mathur assumed office as the WHO Representative to the Maldives on 19th August 2015.
